This is my most recent cake and I was given full creative licence on this one, all she wanted was black and white and two square tiers with the top tier off centre.
My initial idea was to do alternating black and white roses around the tiers but 20 roses in i was getting frustrated and just couldn't bare to make any more *haha*. So i did a last minute total design re-haul and decided on a simple filigree/dragees pattern and the black ribbon. I made four chocolate mud cakes and stacked and carved them creating the two sized cakes i had measured before i started. I filled and frosted using chocolate buttercream and smoothed/measured as much as i could to get a nice clean edge and surface to work with. Then i covered the two cakes in white fondant and supported/stacked the cakes before putting black satin ribbon around the bottom edges using royal icing to secure the ends. I then used plain white vanilla royal icing piped on with a size 0 tip to create the filigree pattern intermittently placing the dragees as i went. I was going to place some black roses around the bottom corner but the black ribbon didn't make them 'pop' so they got left off of the finished product.
The wedding was gorgeous and bride and groom had an absolutely magical day :). And to top it all off the bride and her guests loved the cake - that's all i could ask for.
